Students protest lack of infrastructure at new Telangana medical colleges

Protests have broken out across several newly established government medical colleges over shortages in hostels, laboratories, and lecture halls.

Students at several newly established government medical colleges in Telangana are conducting protests over inadequate infrastructure, according to Telangana Today.

At Government Medical College (GMC) Jagtial, students have launched indefinite protests demanding compliance with National Medical Commission (NMC) minimum standards. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) and other bodies noted that a lack of lecture halls, laboratories, and permanent hostels is compromising training.

In GMC Mulugu, students are reportedly sleeping on mattresses on floors due to a shortage of beds. Male students have been using administrative blocks, while issues with sanitation and mess facilities have been reported.

At GMC Narayanpet, students are being housed in makeshift rooms within a private hospital structure. Students said approximately 10 people are crammed into single rooms that lack proper washroom facilities.

MBBS students and parents at Maheshwaram GMC have renewed indefinite protests at temporary rented premises in Mangalpally. Female students have raised concerns regarding safety risks, such as unlit roads and a lack of compound walls.

Student representatives have demanded written commitments from the state health department, Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), and the NMC to audit facilities and expedite permanent campuses.
