History should not be used for contemporary political purposes, says Romila Thapar

The historian delivered these remarks during the second Sitaram Yechury Memorial Lecture on the subject of historiography and early Indian history.

Professor Romila Thapar stated that the purpose of history is not to construct statements for contemporary political use. She made these remarks while delivering the second Sitaram Yechury Memorial Lecture.

The lecture, titled ‘Historiography and Early Indian History’, was delivered in remembrance of Sitaram Yechury, according to The Hindu.

Thapar noted that she had previously had a small conversation with Sitaram regarding the subject she chose to speak on.

She added that they did not have the opportunity to discuss the topic at length before his passing.
