Amur falcons arrive in Umrangso as ecotourism grows in Assam

The arrival of migratory birds in Dima Hasao district has increased interest in local birdwatching, wildlife photography, and community-led conservation efforts.

Amur falcons have started arriving in Umrangso in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, according to Urban Acres. The birds travel from breeding grounds in East Asia to wintering areas in southern Africa.

The falcons use the Umrangso stopover to feed on insects and build energy reserves before crossing the Arabian Sea. They are expected to stay in the region until December.

The annual arrival has attracted birdwatchers, photographers, and tourists, highlighting the ecotourism potential of Dima Hasao. The Amur Falcon Festival in Umrangso showcases the district's biodiversity, landscapes, and local culture.

Tourism stakeholders noted that growing interest could create opportunities for hotels, homestays, and transport operators. However, they stated that benefits depend on protecting the birds and their habitat.

Wildlife experts have stressed the need to prevent hunting, habitat damage, and disturbance. They called for responsible tourism to ensure visitor movement does not affect feeding grounds.

The Dima Hasao forest department has increased protection measures for the birds. Conservationists said regulated tourism and community participation could establish Umrangso as a major birdwatching destination.
