Punjab government to launch 100 canteens managed by self-help groups

The initiative seeks to provide rural women with livelihoods and offer citizens healthy, low-cost meals at various public locations.

The Punjab government has decided to open 100 canteens managed by self-help groups (SHG) at various public institutions, according to The Tribune.

Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said these units will be set up at Punjab Roadways bus stands, tehsils, DC and MC offices, departmental headquarters, and other major public buildings across the state.

The project follows a promise made by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann during Women’s Day celebrations to support rural women and provide nutritious, affordable food.

To support the project, the state government is offering rent-free space, electricity, and water facilities in government offices, along with kitchen equipment and utensils, Cheema said.

The Punjab State Rural Livelihoods Mission (PSRLM) is working with hotel management colleges to give SHG members seven to 10 days of training in culinary and canteen management.

Cheema noted that a pilot canteen at Vit-Te-Yojana Bhawan in Sector 33, Chandigarh, has already been successful in serving breakfast, lunch, and a 26-item menu.
