Tamil Nadu to procure dhotis and sarees from cooperative societies for Pongal

Minister M. Vijay Balaji stated that 1.87 crore items will be sourced to benefit approximately 60,000 weavers.

Tamil Nadu will procure dhotis and sarees exclusively from state Cooperative Societies for distribution to PDS cardholders during Pongal, according to The Hindu.

Minister of Handlooms and Textiles M. Vijay Balaji said on Thursday that the government has doubled the orders for these items for the festival.

The Minister stated that around 1.87 crore dhotis and sarees will be procured, which will benefit approximately 60,000 weavers making the products.

Mr. Balaji denied claims that the state government plans to procure these garments from other states for distribution to beneficiaries.

Addressing Co-optex revenue, the Minister said no outlets have been closed despite poor sales, as they provide quality garments at reasonable costs.

He added that the government is relocating Co-optex outlets to crowded areas and using online promotion to increase sales.
