Elephant calf to be flown from Kerala to Gujarat for treatment

The 18-month-old calf suffering from a genetic bone disorder will receive specialised care at Vantara in Jamnagar.

An 18-month-old elephant calf suffering from a genetic bone disorder will be flown from Kerala to Jamnagar in Gujarat on Friday for specialised treatment at Vantara, according to the Deccan Chronicle.

The calf, which weighs between 125 and 130 kg, is unable to stand or walk. It was moved from the Kodanad elephant centre to an animal ambulance using a crane and 10 to 12 people before being taken to Nedumbassery airport.

Chief Wildlife Warden P Pugazhendi told reporters that the calf was brought to Kodanad shortly after birth. He said the animal was found to have osteopenia, a bone-related disorder, after it fell once.

Pugazhendi stated that Kerala lacks the necessary facilities for this specialised care. He added that Vantara has agreed to bear the entire cost of the treatment, which will involve hormonal therapy and hydrotherapy.

The initial treatment period is expected to last four to six months. A team including a veterinary officer, forest department officials, and the calf's mahout will accompany the animal to assist in its care.

The department has formed a monitoring committee to review progress and submit reports at least once a week. Pugazhendi said the calf would be brought back to Kerala once it regains its health.
