Abhishek Banerjee alleges 2 am attack on Kolkata residence by BJP workers

The Trinamool Congress MP claimed the attack was the seventh attempt on his life in six months and criticised the police response.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) all-India general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters attacked his Kalighat residence at 2 am on Saturday. According to The Indian Express, the clash occurred while supporters had gathered outside his house for his birthday celebration.

Banerjee claimed that armed BJP supporters engaged in an argument with TMC workers over the chanting of 'thief' slogans and then attacked the house. He alleged that miscreants used bricks and stones to beat workers, resulting in serious injuries, including a party worker named Tapas who reportedly lost part of a thumb.

The MP stated that the incident took place in front of the police, but no action was taken to control the situation. In a post on X, Banerjee alleged this was the seventh attempt on his life in the last six months and criticised the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court for remaining 'mute spectators'.

Banerjee also raised concerns regarding suspicious surveillance at his home and office over the previous two days. He claimed unidentified individuals conducting reconnaissance identified themselves as police personnel when confronted. He said he would bring the matter to the attention of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the Kolkata Police, the Union Home Ministry, and the West Bengal Police.

The BJP has dismissed the allegations as 'drama'. West Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghosh said the statements were being made to mislead people politically and noted that no one had the time to kill Banerjee.
