Death toll rises after Delhi building collapse in Hauz Qazi
Two more bodies were recovered from the debris of a three-storey structure that collapsed near Chawri Bazar Metro station on Thursday.
The death toll from the collapse of a three-storey building in Old Delhi's Hauz Qazi area has reached four on Saturday, according to Rediff. Two additional bodies were retrieved from the rubble of the site located near Chawri Bazar Metro station.
The structure collapsed on Thursday morning while workers were laying a roof slab. Officials stated the building was an unauthorised construction on a 50-square-metre plot that lacked sanctioned plans and used non-engineered materials.
One of the newly recovered deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Pankaj Sharma, a resident of Khagaria district in Bihar. Another body was recovered but remains unidentified, according to Rediff.
Earlier, two people, Kishori (40) and Sanjeet (45), were declared dead. Two others, Sahdev Chaudhary (25) and Firoz (37), were rescued with injuries and are reported to be stable.
The Delhi Police have filed an FIR under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The New Indian Express reported that three contractors, Siraj, Tajuddin, and Furkan, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The Delhi Police had previously alerted the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) about the illegal construction in June. Authorities are continuing efforts to clear the rubble and locate any remaining individuals.
