According to the Times of India, Diwali 2026 will see Naraka Chaturdashi, Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja, and Deepavali falling on the same day.
Diwali 2026 is scheduled to be celebrated on Sunday, November 8, according to reports from the Times of India, The Economic Times, and Moneycontrol. The IMD’s Positional Astronomy Centre and Drik Panchang indicate that several festivals, including Naraka Chaturdashi, Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja, and Deepavali, will fall on the same day this year.
In Mumbai, the recommended time for Lakshmi Puja is from 6:27 pm to 8:27 pm, while in Delhi, the window is between 5:54 pm and 7:50 pm. The Economic Times noted that Choti Diwali, associated with Lord Krishna’s victory over Narakasura, is also celebrated on Saturday, November 8, 2026.
The festival holds diverse origins across India. Northern traditions involve lighting lamps to welcome Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshmana to Ayodhya. Other traditions focus on Lord Krishna's defeat of Narakasura or honouring Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity.
Diwali also carries significance for other faiths. Jains observe Lord Mahavira’s attainment of nirvana, and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas, which is linked to the return of Guru Hargobind Sahib.
The celebrations often include five days of rituals such as Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi, Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.
