Janice Tjen and Magda Linette reach Chennai Open final
The Indonesian top seed and the former Australian Open semifinalist secured their places in the singles final on Saturday.
Janice Tjen and Magda Linette will face each other in the singles final of the WTA 250 Chennai Open after winning their respective semifinal matches on Saturday, according to Sportstar.
World No. 75 Tjen defeated USA’s Robin Montgomery 6-3, 6-4 at the SDAT Stadium in Nungambakkam. The top-seeded Indonesian secured her ninth consecutive win at the tournament.
Tjen, who won her first Tour-level title at this event last year, noted that playing amidst the sound of firecrackers was difficult. She said she tried to stay focused and tune out the noise after being informed by the supervisor that fireworks would occur during the match.
Magda Linette overcame Anastasia Zakharova 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a match lasting one hour and 55 minutes. Linette, a former World No. 19, was the third seed in the tournament.
Zakharova, ranked World No. 107, won the first set with an aggressive style of play but lacked the consistency to continue the comeback. Linette used the pace of Zakharova's shots to redirect the ball into vacant corners during the second and third sets.
