Mohammed Shami announces retirement from Test cricket
The Indian pacer will continue to play white-ball cricket including the IPL and domestic competitions.
Indian pacer Mohammed Shami announced his retirement from Test cricket on Friday via an Instagram video message. The 36-year-old, who has been part of the national side for 13 years, confirmed he is stepping away from the longest format of the game.
According to Telangana Today, Shami finished his red-ball career with 229 wickets from 64 matches. He becomes the sixth most successful Indian pacer in Tests, following Kapil Dev, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Javagal Srinath, and Jasprit Bumrah.
In his social media post, Shami said he is moving on from the white jersey but will always cherish the memories. He noted that every injury and comeback during his career taught him something and described Test cricket as a very special part of his life.
Shami's last Test appearance was during the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at the Oval. He has been out of the Indian Test team since the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The pacer clarified that he will continue to play white-ball cricket in domestic competitions and the IPL. He added that he may also play four-day matches occasionally if he remains fit.
Shami expressed his gratitude to his coaches, trainers, fans, and family. He also thanked the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for their support throughout his journey.
