Pakistani security forces fire on protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir

Around 20 people are feared dead and 200 injured following clashes in Rawalakot over rising living costs and electricity tariffs.

Pakistani security forces fired on protesters in Rawalakot and nearby areas of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, leaving around 20 civilians feared dead and 200 injured, according to the Times of India.

The violence occurred during demonstrations against soaring electricity tariffs, heavy taxation, wheat subsidy cuts, and violence against local civil rights activists.

Protesters allege that security units used the cover of curfews to clear a sit-in location by firing at people in various spots.

JAAC leader Sardar Umar Nazir shared a video on social media showing bomb fragments recovered after a drone strike on residential areas, accusing the government of attacking agitators from several directions.

The military has been accused of using drones and rocket-propelled grenades against those protesting.

The demonstrations in Rawalakot were triggered by the government's failure to deliver on a 38-point charter of rights, and protests have since expanded to Muzaffarabad.
