At least 11 killed in bus-truck collision in eastern Pakistan
Rescue teams used heavy machinery for three hours to free passengers trapped in the wreckage in Punjab province.
At least 11 people died and 33 others were injured after a passenger bus collided with a truck in the Pakpattan district of Punjab province on Thursday, according to reports by The Times of India and The New Indian Express.
Rescue teams used cranes and heavy machinery during a three-hour operation to extract passengers trapped inside the wreckage, police said. Dr Ahmad Raza, a hospital official, stated that authorities declared an emergency at the hospital and summoned additional doctors and medical staff to treat the injured.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari expressed grief over the deaths in a social media statement. He offered condolences to the bereaved families and directed relevant authorities to provide all possible support for medical treatment and relief operations.
Road accidents are common in Pakistan due to poor road conditions, unsafe driving practices and inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations. Last month, a bus collided with a van in Balochistan province, killing at least 12 people and injuring around two dozen others.
