Four tankers hit by mines in Strait of Hormuz, Iran says

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed vessels struck mines while using unauthorised routes near the Omani coast.

Iran reported that four tankers were damaged in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that three tankers caught fire after hitting mines while navigating an unauthorised southern route near the Omani coast, according to reports from Deccan Herald and WION.

The IRGC claimed the vessels had turned off all radar and navigation systems and ignored warnings from the IRGC navy. IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebi challenged US claims that the shipping routes had been cleared, demanding independent evidence rather than social media statements.

The UK maritime security agency UKMTO reported that one outbound vessel was on fire approximately 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab. This follows a report from the UKMTO that a vessel was struck by two unidentified projectiles on Wednesday.

The conflict has seen an increase in attacks, with at least 30 to 35 vessels reportedly hit since October. Oil prices have dropped by more than $20 a barrel from last week as traders weigh the possibility of renewed US strikes.

Iranian officials have been in discussions with Qatari mediators since last week regarding proposals to end hostilities. While Qatar stated on Tuesday that the US and Iran are reviewing proposals to bridge differences, a senior Iranian official noted that both sides remain far apart on major issues.
