President Donald Trump must choose between renewed military strikes or diplomatic negotiations following Republican defeats in the US mid-term elections.
President Donald Trump is facing mounting pressure to decide the future of the conflict in Iran following Republican losses in the US mid-term elections. The elections, which saw Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, have left Trump as a lame-duck president with a limited window to act before the new Congressional session begins in January, according to reports from The Federal and WION.
Trump stated in an interview with Fox News on Wednesday that high gasoline prices caused by the war in Iran prevented Americans from seeing the economic benefits of his presidency. He defended the military campaign as necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, saying, "We had no choice. You can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon."
The US military is reportedly finishing preparations for possible major combat operations, including the deployment of 10,000 more troops, additional warships, and a third aircraft carrier strike group to the region, according to WION and the Wall Street Journal. This follows reports of US strikes on sites in Qeshm Island and Bandar Lengeh in Iran just before the elections.
While some officials are pushing for fresh military strikes followed by peace talks, others want to wind down the war. Vice President JD Vance has linked the Republican electoral rout to the war, stating, "The reason we lost is the war."
Diplomatic efforts continue, with a letter from Vance to Iran’s Mohsen Rezaei proposing the resumption of direct peace talks. However, analysts note that Iran may refuse concessions due to perceived political weakness in the US following the election results.
