Magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits China's Xinjiang region near Ladakh border

Tremors from the earthquake were felt in parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, according to the National Centre for Seismology.

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the Xinjiang region of China near the Ladakh border on Thursday night, according to News18 reporting on the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) data.

The NCS stated on X that the tremor occurred at 10:26 pm IST on November 5, 2026. The quake originated at a depth of 164 kilometres, with the epicentre located at latitude 35.587° North and longitude 78.130° East.

While tremors were reported across parts of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh, there are currently no confirmed reports of any casualties or damage.

This seismic activity follows a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in China's Tibet region weeks ago. That event, reported by the Xinhua news agency, killed at least 16 people and injured 32 others after more than 300 houses collapsed.

The previous earthquake in Tibet struck at a depth of 10 kilometres in Maru township, Baqen county, disrupting power and telecommunications. China remains prone to such tremors, including an earthquake in Tingri county, Tibet, in January 2025 that killed at least 126 people.
