Pope Leo XIV says he is in fairly good shape after surgery
The 71-year-old pontiff began a 12-day tour of South America starting with Uruguay on Friday.
Pope Leo XIV said on Friday that he is in "fairly good shape" following lung cancer surgery last month. According to the Hindustan Times, the 71-year-old pontiff began a 12-day tour of South America, starting with a visit to Uruguay.
The Pope addressed reporters on board the papal plane regarding his health and the commencement of the trip. He said he was convinced the journey had to go forward and expressed thanks to medical assistance for his current condition.
Leo underwent an operation at Rome's Gemelli hospital on October 13, where a cancerous tumour and part of his right lung were removed. He was discharged from the hospital on October 17.
Doctors cited by the Vatican have stated that the Pope is fit to travel and does not require any further therapy. When asked for advice for those facing a cancer diagnosis, Leo told reporters "not to be afraid."
The Pope emphasised that regular check-ups are a blessing and that early detection is the best approach. He also noted that he has not yet resumed playing tennis, which is a favourite sport, but said he will in the future.
