Trump appoints Stephen Miller as chief of staff to replace Susie Wiles

The leadership change follows Republican losses in the midterm elections where the party lost control of Congress.

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Stephen Miller will replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026. Miller, who currently serves as deputy chief of staff, is one of the president's most trusted advisers, according to reports from Hindustan Times, The Hindu and Times of India.

Wiles, the first woman to hold the position and the longest-serving chief of staff for Trump, will move to the president's political operation. In a social media post, Trump praised Wiles for doing an outstanding job and thanked her for her service.

Wiles stated on X that serving the president in the White House had been the honour of a lifetime. She added that while her role is changing, her commitment to the president and the mission would not change.

The transition follows the Republican Party's loss of control of Congress in the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Former White House adviser Steve Bannon had previously called for Wiles to be removed immediately due to the election results.

Miller has been a key architect of the administration's immigration policies, including plans for mass deportations and border enforcement. He previously served as a speechwriter during the 2016 presidential campaign and as an aide to former Senator Jeff Sessions.

Miller is scheduled to officially assume the role of chief of staff on Monday, November 9, 2026.
