Punjab aims to host 2027 Junior Hockey World Cup
Hockey Punjab President Nitin Kohli plans to bring the tournament to the state following the success of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy.
Hockey Punjab President Nitin Kohli stated on Monday that he will make concerted efforts to bring the 2027 Junior Hockey World Cup to Punjab. This follows the successful hosting of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy in Jalandhar and Mohali, according to The Tribune.
Kohli, who is also a vice-president of Hockey India, said the success of the Champions Trophy has paved the way for more international events. He noted that the Punjab Government is currently in the process of allotting a dedicated agency through official tendering to ensure proper stadium maintenance.
During a media interaction, officials including Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia, Commissioner of Police Satinder Singh, and Municipal Corporation Commissioner Surinder Singh lauded the event. They expressed gratitude to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for his support in hosting the tournament in Jalandhar.
Kohli said stadiums in Jalandhar and Mohali were upgraded within a four-month window to become fully equipped for international competition. He praised the district administration for transforming infrastructure at record speed.
Official communications from Hockey India and the Asian Hockey Federation indicated that the Jalandhar-Mohali matches saw some of the most phenomenal public turnouts out of the last 50 international tournaments held in India. Kohli said the response from local residents signals a promising future for the sport.
