Landowners and conservation groups protect 1,100 acres in Quebec
Property donations and land purchases totalling nearly C$6 million have secured natural habitats in the MRC d’Argenteuil region.
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), its partner organisations, and local landowners have protected over 1,100 acres in the MRC d’Argenteuil region of Quebec through land purchases worth nearly C$6 million, according to a Times of India report on October 15, 2026.
The conservation effort involves properties in Gore, Mille-Isles, and Lachute within the Oka-Tremblant ecological connectivity region. In Gore and Mille-Isles, a combination of land sales and ecological donations has secured about 780 acres of habitat.
In Lachute, two land purchases protected more than 345 acres in the Rivière de l’Est watershed wetland complex. One 143-acre property was acquired via a sale that included a partial donation from Christopher J. Sweeney.
Landowners also contributed property worth more than C$2 million to the initiative. Mélanie Deslongchamps, Manager of Provincial Operations in Quebec for Ducks Unlimited Canada, said these donations allow owners to take direct action in a region where private land ownership is common.
Romy Bazo, Conservation Director at Nature-Action Québec, stated the initiative demonstrates collaboration between governments, partners, and conservation groups to secure essential habitats.
The projects received financial support from the Government of Quebec, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the Natural Heritage Conservation Program, and Environment and Climate Change Canada's Canada Nature Fund.
