Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered the implementation of the 'Vetri Laptop Scheme' for college students, according to BusinessLine. The state government announced on Saturday that Rs 2,000 crore has been allocated for the initiative.
A high-level committee will be formed under the leadership of the chief minister to oversee the scheme, which was announced in the 2026-27 budget. The government has issued a Government Order granting administrative sanction and setting guidelines for the rollout.
The scheme will benefit first and second-year undergraduate and diploma students, including polytechnic and ITI students, in government and state-aided colleges. Eligible courses include arts, science, engineering, medicine, veterinary science, agriculture, fisheries, and law.
The initiative also extends to students in their third and fourth year of professional courses at government and state-aided institutions who did not benefit from the scheme during the 2025-26 academic year. Engineering students will receive laptops with Intel Core i5 processors or equivalent versions.
State-run ELCOT has been given administrative sanction to procure laptops that meet all quality standards. The government stated that laptops are essential educational tools that will help students enhance technological knowledge, pursue online education, and prepare for employment.
