Keanu Reeves offered 15-minute Zoom call for cancer charity fundraiser
The actor participated in an online initiative after the Idaho-based charity cancelled its largest annual fundraising event due to the pandemic.
Actor Keanu Reeves offered a private 15-minute Zoom conversation to the highest bidder to support a children's cancer charity in 2020, according to the Times of India.
The initiative was organised by Camp Rainbow Gold, an Idaho-based nonprofit that supports children diagnosed with cancer and their families. The charity launched the online fundraiser after being forced to cancel its Share Your Heart Ball annual event with 48 hours' notice due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The experience, titled 15 Minutes of Fame with Keanu Reeves, allowed the winner to share a virtual glass of wine, hear stories, ask questions, or learn karate moves. Bidding for the session reached $16,600, according to reports from CNN and Entertainment Tonight, surpassing an initial estimated value of $10,000.
Other contributors to the Shine for Camp online fundraiser included singer Ally Brooke, who offered a 15-minute Zoom mini-concert, and voice actor Rob Paulsen, who offered a one-hour voice acting experience.
Executive director Elizabeth Lizberg said the organisation recognised other charities were moving fundraising activities online. The call with Reeves was scheduled for the week beginning July 6, 2020.
