Four people killed as two trains collide in Egypt's Giza province

Emergency teams are clearing wreckage after a train rear-ended another service near the Al-Ayyat district on Sunday.

Four people were killed and 88 were injured after two passenger trains collided in the Giza Governorate on Sunday, according to reports from Bhaskar English and Times Now. The accident occurred in the Al-Ayyat district, approximately 52 to 76 kilometres from Cairo, between the Kafr Ammar and Al-Raqqa railway stations.

The Egyptian National Railways Authority stated that a train travelling from Giza to Fayoum rear-ended another train that was travelling from Cairo to Aswan. The collision caused several carriages to derail and fall down an embankment, disrupting rail services on the Cairo-Aswan line.

More than 50 ambulances were deployed to the scene to transport the injured to hospitals, including Al-Wasta Hospital and Al-Ayyat Hospital. Egypt's Health Minister Dr Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said patients were being treated for head injuries and broken bones.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi expressed concern over the accident and ordered an investigation. He said action would be taken against anyone found responsible for negligence. Egyptian prosecutors and the railway authority have also launched investigations to determine the cause of the collision.

Relief and rescue teams used cranes to remove damaged carriages and debris from the tracks to restore services. The accident follows a history of rail incidents in the country, which has seen nine major rail accidents in the last 25 years.
