Seven killed and over 125 injured in Egypt train crash

A train travelling between Giza and Fayoum collided with another train on the Cairo-to-Aswan route in Giza province on Sunday.

At least seven people died and more than 125 others were injured in a train crash near Cairo in Egypt’s Giza province on Sunday, according to the country’s Health Ministry, as reported by Al Jazeera.

A train travelling between Giza and Fayoum ran into the back of another train on the Cairo-to-Aswan route. The collision caused the second train to derail onto a countryside road in the al-Ayyat district.

More than 70 ambulances were used for transport and evacuation operations at the scene, with casualties taken to nearby hospitals. Emergency rescue teams and cranes were sent to clear the wreckage.

The Egyptian National Railways said efforts are underway to restore train services to their normal schedule as soon as possible.

The al-Ayyat district has previously seen major rail accidents, including a 2002 fire that killed more than 370 people and multiple crashes in 2009 that killed dozens.

While Egypt has invested billions of dollars into transport infrastructure like highways and high-speed rail lines over the last decade, much of the dated train services have yet to be overhauled.
