Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has appealed to affluent families and income tax payers to surrender their 125 units of free electricity.
The Bihar government will launch a campaign from December 1 to encourage people to voluntarily contribute towards the electricity subsidy, according to The New Indian Express and ANI.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced the drive while interacting with reporters in Patna on Sunday. He appealed to financially well-off families and income tax payers to give up the benefit of 125 units of free electricity.
The state government provides electricity subsidies worth approximately Rs 10,000 annually to each family. Currently, 1.92 crore families receive 125 units of free electricity every month under the scheme.
Choudhary stated that the state government spends around Rs 23,000 crore annually on electricity subsidies. He said the campaign is similar to the appeal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for people to surrender their LPG subsidies.
The Chief Minister added that those who voluntarily surrender the benefit would be recognised for their contribution. He also noted that Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Bihar on November 21.
During the visit, which marks one year of the NDA government in the state, several announcements and MoUs are expected. Many industrialists are also expected to participate in the programme.
