Chennai Mayor condemns workers handling Deepavali waste without protective gear
Greater Chennai Corporation workers were seen clearing silt and stagnant water using bare hands during the recent rains and festive season.
Chennai Mayor R. Priya has condemned the practice of Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) conservancy workers handling silt, garbage, and stagnant water without adequate protective equipment. According to a report by The Hindu, workers were observed clearing stormwater drain (SWD) catch pits and stagnant water using their bare hands, lacking gloves and footwear.
The Mayor stated that such practices must stop, noting that waste from Deepavali, such as discarded crackers, presents extra difficulties. She said that cracker waste could contain chemicals and needs specific cleaning arrangements instead of being combined with standard garbage.
A GCC official acknowledged that the current budget estimates for safety equipment are insufficient as they are largely based on the number of man-days. The official said that from the next time, the corporation will make more liberal provisions for safety gear and incur additional expenditure for worker safety.
The official noted that workers sometimes find provided gloves uncomfortable, especially when they tear, though gloves supplied in the Tondiarpet, Ambattur, and Anna Nagar Zones had a good grip. While workers are being advised to use the equipment, the official said there is a need for more awareness regarding the risks of handling sewage without protection.
