GCC distributes 30,000 bags for separate firecracker waste collection

The Greater Chennai Corporation has deployed 600 personnel and 350 vehicles to manage waste during the Diwali festival.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has provided 30,000 specialised bags to conservancy workers to ensure the separate collection of firecracker waste, according to a report by The Hindu.

Each bag has a 50 kg capacity. GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran has asked residents to avoid discarding firecracker remains on streets, in stormwater drains, or in public areas, and to instead give the waste to workers visiting their localities.

The solid waste management department has made special arrangements for the safe disposal of waste generated during the Diwali festival within the corporation limits. The civic body has also deployed 600 personnel and 350 vehicles for this purpose.

Administrators of residential complexes identified as bulk waste generators have been asked to collect firecracker waste at specific locations without mixing it with other refuse. The corporation will then transport and dispose of the collected material using appropriate methods.

The GCC has released guidelines for residents, advising them to use only green crackers and to burst them during permitted time slots of 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Residents should avoid bursting crackers in silence zones or near electrical transformers and huts.

To maintain cleanliness, the civic body will intensify night-time road sweeping and cleaning operations using mechanical sweepers and workers during the festival.
