Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale finish as runners-up at Chennai Open

The Indian duo made history as the first all-Indian pair to reach a WTA Tour doubles final.

Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale lost the WTA 250 Chennai Open doubles final on Sunday to the Swiss pair Simona Waltert and Naima Karamoko. The match, held at the SDAT Stadium in Nungambakkam, ended 6-2, 6-0 in favour of the Swiss players, according to Sportstar.

The loss ended a historic run for the Indian pair, who became the first all-Indian duo to reach a doubles final at a WTA Tour event. Adkar and Bhosale previously defeated Weronika Falkowska and Alana Smith in the semi-finals and Jodie Burrage and Robin Montgomery in the quarter-finals.

The final lasted one hour and 10 minutes before approximately 700 spectators. The Swiss winners, Karamoko and Waltert, received USD 13,600, while the runners-up earned USD 7,650. Tamil Nadu Minister for Public Works and Sports Development Aadhav Arjuna presented the trophies.

Karamoko said that she and Waltert had played together for the first time and hoped to play more weeks together. Waltert noted that they had to adapt to the atmosphere as Diwali fireworks were occurring during the match.

In the singles category, Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi reached the quarter-finals, becoming the first Indian since Sania Mirza in 2012 to reach the last eight of a WTA singles draw. Ankita Raina and Hiroko Kuwata exited in the opening round of the doubles competition.
