Shoppers throng Delhi markets for last-minute Diwali purchases

While markets saw a surge in footfall on Saturday, some traders reported sales were lower than last year.

Shoppers across the national capital visited various markets on Saturday to make last-minute purchases for Diwali, according to reports by Hindustan Times and ThePrint. Markets including Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Sadar Bazaar, and Karol Bagh experienced heavy footfall as people bought clothes, decorative items, and festive essentials.

In Mehrauli, a wholesale flower market, buyers from Delhi and neighbouring areas sought marigolds, rose petals, and buds. A shopkeeper noted that the morning rush was so intense that there was little space to stand. Narayan Singh, a customer from Gurugram, mentioned that the flowers were available at lower rates than in regular markets.

Despite the recent increase in crowds, some traders expressed concern over declining business. The Tribune reported that some traders estimated sales were approximately 20 per cent lower than the previous year, attributing this to inflation, protests, and a shift toward online shopping.

Misbulhaq, a worker at Bhagirath Palace in Chandni Chowk, said business returned to normal levels after a brief uptick earlier in the week. He estimated a 20-25 per cent dip in sales compared to last year. Brijesh Goyal, chairman of the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), stated that rallies held between October 1 and November 1 affected business activity across the city.

In Sadar Bazaar, association president Paramjeet Pamma said the recent surge in footfall exceeded expectations, with some stocks selling out. However, he noted that smaller traders faced losses due to inflation.
