Northern Railway operates special trains for Diwali and Chhath Puja rush
The Ferozepur Division is running 15 pairs of special trains to help migrant workers travel to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
The Ferozepur Division of the Northern Railway has introduced special trains and extra coaches to handle the increase in passengers travelling for Diwali and Chhath Puja, according to The Tribune. The division is running 15 pairs of special trains, totaling 98 trips, to connect the region with eastern destinations.
Of these services, five pairs start from Amritsar, six from Ludhiana, two from Ferozepur Cantt, and one each from Jalandhar City and Chheharta. Specific services include the Amritsar-Katihar special, which arrives at Jalandhar City on Fridays, and the Jalandhar City-Barhni special, which departs every Thursday.
To increase capacity, two additional third AC coaches have been attached to the Ferozepur Cantt-Patna and Amritsar-Barauni special trains. Officials stated they may introduce more special trains if the passenger volume continues to rise.
Authorities are also developing temporary waiting areas covering 3,700 square metres across four major stations, including Ludhiana and Amritsar. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been deployed to manage crowds and ensure safety.
Separately, the Ministry of Railways is operating 106 special trains, including Vande Bharat Express, to ease the festive rush, as reported by The Indian Express. East Central Railway (ECR) Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Saraswati Chandra said that as of November 3, 2026, the zone announced 103 pairs of special trains originating or terminating at its stations.
