Punjab Police deported wanted gangster Gurwinder Singh, also known as Afridi, from Ethiopia on November 6, 2026, according to ANI. The deportation followed a 10-month international manhunt conducted under Operation SHAHID.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Sunday that the intelligence-led operation began on January 20, 2026, under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The operation involved the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) of Counter Intelligence, Punjab, with support from central agencies and the Indian Embassy in Ethiopia.
Yadav stated that Afridi had obtained a passport in the name of Vijender Singh through the Regional Passport Office in Lucknow on February 12, 2025. Using this passport, he travelled to the UAE on March 31, 2025. The DGP added that Afridi had also acquired a fake Mexican passport and attempted to convince authorities he was a Mexican national, but he was subsequently detained and deported to the UAE.
Afridi is identified as a key kingpin of the Doni Bal-Prabh Dassuwal gang. According to police records, he is involved in over 30 serious criminal cases and is implicated in five murders.
More than seven Interpol notices were issued concerning the individual during the operation. Afridi arrived at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport early Sunday and is being taken to Punjab by an AGTF team.
