SSB jawan found dead at India-Nepal border outpost in UP

A 33-year-old personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal was found critically injured following a gunshot at a Maharajganj border outpost.

A 33-year-old Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan was found dead while on duty at a border outpost in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district during the night of Saturday and Sunday, according to the Hindustan Times.

The incident occurred at approximately 1.40am at the Khanuwa Border Outpost (BOP) under the SSB’s 66th Battalion. Fellow personnel were alerted by the sound of a gunshot and found the jawan critically injured, but he later died.

Nautanwa circle officer Basant Singh said that police dispatched a team to the outpost after receiving information about the death. He stated that the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination and further investigation is underway.

The service rifle allegedly used in the incident has been taken into custody for examination. SSB DIG Deepak Barnwal, 43rd Battalion Commandant Ujjwal Dutta, and deputy Commandants Apoorva Anand and Amit Kumar Singh reached the location.

Preliminary information suggests the jawan was under emotional distress after the death of his elder brother about two-and-a-half months ago. He had returned to duty on October 3 after taking leave.

Police and SSB authorities have started investigations and informed the family of the deceased. The exact circumstances of the incident have not yet been established.
