Tamil Nadu expands crop loan waiver scheme to Rs 75,000

The TVK government has sanctioned an additional Rs 2,842.77 crore to extend relief to eligible farmers.

The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday expanded its crop loan waiver scheme, providing relief of up to Rs 75,000 to eligible farmers, according to The New Indian Express.

Under the restructured scheme, farmers who borrowed up to Rs 75,000 will receive a full waiver of their loan amount. Those who borrowed more than Rs 75,000 will receive a waiver of up to Rs 75,000.

The government has extended the eligibility period by one month, covering loans obtained from co-operative societies between May 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026. Previously, the period ended on February 28, 2026.

The total estimated expenditure for the expanded scheme is Rs 9,062.83 crore. Of this, Rs 6,220.056 crore has already been released, and the government has authorised the release of the remaining Rs 2,842.77 crore.

The revised scheme includes relief for 10,810 farmers who had already repaid their loans in full. It also provides for interest reimbursements and covers eligible loans taken by pensioners receiving less than Rs 10,000 a month.

While several farmers' organisations welcomed the extension, they urged the TVK government to fulfil its election promise of a full waiver. They also requested relief for those who borrowed before 2025.
