Trump orders DOJ to investigate Democratic lawmakers for alleged extortion

The US President accused Democrats of using impeachment and legal threats against administration officials and Republican donors following their midterm election victory.

US President Donald Trump has directed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to conduct an immediate investigation into Democratic lawmakers. According to the Times of India, Trump alleged that these lawmakers are using threats of prosecution, imprisonment, and impeachment to intimidate senior administration officials and Republican supporters.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump described these actions as "extortion at the highest level." He claimed that Democratic leaders are targeting the US attorney general and Republican donors based on their political affiliations, though he provided no evidence for these claims, Al Jazeera reported.

Trump specifically named Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, alleging she intends to target young people who hold Republican values. He also stated that threatening letters have been sent to innocent individuals by Democratic political leaders.

The order follows midterm elections in which Democrats secured control of both chambers of the US Congress. This shift will allow Democratic lawmakers to conduct oversight hearings, issue subpoenas, and investigate administration decisions starting in January.

Democratic lawmakers and candidates have indicated they intend to pursue probes into the financial dealings of the Trump family, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Todd Blanche.
