Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale reach first all-Indian WTA doubles final
The Indian duo defeated second seeds Weronika Falkowska and Alana Smith in a Chennai Open semifinal on Saturday.
Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale became the first all-Indian pair to reach a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour-level doubles final after defeating Weronika Falkowska of Poland and Alana Smith of the USA on Saturday, November 7, 2026. According to The Hindu, the Indian pair won the Chennai Open semifinal 6-2, 2-6, 10-8.
The match saw the Indian duo recover from a mid-match slump to win the deciding super tie-break. Adkar and Bhosale controlled the first set, but the second seeds levelled the contest in the second set after Adkar received a medical timeout for her left thigh.
In the final tie-break, Falkowska and Smith led 3-0 before the Indians fought back. Adkar secured the victory with a forehand down the line to seal the win.
This result marks a milestone for Indian women's tennis, as no previous all-Indian combination has reached a final at the main WTA Tour level. While Shikha Uberoi and her sister Neha reached finals in 2005, Neha represented the USA.
Former Indian player Sania Mirza won 43 doubles titles but never won them with an Indian partner. Other Indian players like Ankita Raina and Karman Thandi have won titles at the WTA 125 level, which is below the main Tour.
