Purulia: Sub-Assistant Engineer arrested for corruption in West Bengal
The West Bengal Anti-Corruption Branch detained a suspended municipal engineer following allegations of financial misconduct and land-related irregularities.
The West Bengal Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) arrested a suspended Sub-Assistant Engineer of the Raghunathpur Municipality in Purulia district on Monday. According to The Hawk, the arrest follows a case registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
An ACB official stated that the investigation involves claims of mishandling government money, improper municipal projects, and suspected issues regarding state-owned land. The official said that investigators have collected tender documents, an enquiry report from the Sub-Divisional Officer, and property records belonging to the accused and his family.
The accused reportedly failed to appear before the Investigating Officer despite being served two notices under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The official added that further investigation and legal formalities are currently in progress.
In a separate incident last month, a revenue inspector from the Land and Land Reforms Office in Aushgram, East Burdwan district, was caught red-handed while accepting a Rs 4,000 bribe for an Economically Weaker Section (EWS) certificate. The state administration said it will increase such operations to ensure government services remain transparent and corruption-free.
