Ahmedabad Crime Branch detains 61 Bangladeshi nationals during verification drive
The operation, conducted ahead of Diwali, targeted individuals suspected of residing illegally in various zones of the city.
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch detained 61 Bangladeshi nationals suspected of residing illegally in Ahmedabad during a special verification drive, according to The Hawk on Monday.
The operation was based on technical inputs and human intelligence, covering several city zones. Around 100 suspicious individuals were apprehended, with 61 identified as Bangladeshi nationals.
ACP (In-Charge) of the Crime Branch, S S Ninama, said many of those detained were living in slum settlements in Danilimda, Narol, Odhav and Nikol.
Ninama stated that most of the individuals were engaged in masonry, domestic work, other forms of daily-wage labour, or small-scale businesses. Some women were found to be associated with the spa business.
The police said the individuals arrived in the city in different groups through various routes and no specific agent has been identified so far. No forged Indian documents have been recovered, as most carried documents issued in Bangladesh.
The detained individuals are being sent to the Gujarat Illegal Immigrant Centre (GIIC) for further proceedings before deportation procedures begin. The Crime Branch said verification drives will continue.
