Farmers to protest proposed India-U.S. trade agreement

Samyukta Kisan Morcha national convener Gurnam Singh Charuni says the deal could hand the agricultural sector to the United States.

Farmers across India will unite to stop the central government from signing a proposed trade deal with the United States, according to The Hindu.

Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) national convener Gurnam Singh Charuni made this claim while inaugurating a Kisan Mahapanchayat at Plachimada in Palakkad on Sunday.

Charuni alleged the agreement would allow unlimited imports, impacting the dairy sector, poultry farming, fisheries, small businesses, and agriculture.

He stated that farmers' organisations intend to start a nationwide protest, with specific programmes to be announced at a meeting in Kurukshetra, Haryana, on November 25.

Charuni noted that the government previously withdrew from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) following public demonstrations.

Farmers' organisations have expressed concerns that the deal could expose domestic producers to subsidised American imports and have called for the protection of subsidies and import duties.
