Humayun Kabir warns of siege if mosque event is disrupted

The Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder plans to begin the second phase of mosque construction in Murshidabad on December 6.

Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir announced on Monday that the second phase of construction for his Babri Masjid-styled mosque in Murshidabad, West Bengal, will begin on December 6. According to the Deccan Chronicle, the event will include a congregation of five lakh Muslims.

Kabir, who is also the Nowda MLA, stated that the proposed mosque is scheduled to be inaugurated on the same date two years from now. He threatened to lay a siege on National Highway 12 if the police obstruct the event.

Reacting to the threat, Rejinagar BJP MLA Sakharov Sarkar said that if Kabir tries to divide people by playing religious cards, he will receive a befitting reply. Sarkar added that if an untoward situation unfolds, Kabir will be confined to his house.

Kabir later blamed certain individuals for spreading rumours that he was pocketing construction funds. He declared that he has received ₹8,68,14,520 in public donations and has spent ₹8,31,49,569 on the three-storeyed mosque building.

The total cost for the construction of the mosque is estimated to be around ₹87 crores.
