Iran offers to reopen Strait of Hormuz in two days if US meets demands

Tehran says it can restore security to the vital energy corridor if Washington agrees to specific conditions.

Tehran expressed readiness on Monday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days if the United States accepts its conditions, according to reports from The Hindu, Mathrubhumi and Hindustan Times. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the offer to open the energy corridor is an indication of Iran's good-faith approach.

The Iranian official stated that messages are being exchanged with the United States through mediators. Baqaei noted that further discussions depend on the US accepting Iranian demands, adding that security could be restored and negotiations resumed shortly after.

Iran's conditions include ending the Middle East war on all fronts, unfreezing Iranian assets abroad, lifting oil sanctions, and ending the US naval blockade. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also said the US must accept a new transit route agreed upon by Iran and Oman and reduce American troop deployments in the region.

The proposal comes as US President Donald Trump issued threats during midterm election rallies. On Saturday, Trump mentioned the need to address one or two targets, including Pickaxe Mountain in central Iran, a site suspected of being a nuclear facility which Tehran denies.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime gateway that normally carries one-fifth of global oil consumption. Iran has blockaded the waterway since the conflict began in February, while the US has implemented a naval blockade on Iranian ports since August.
