Nitin Nabin leads BJP protest march in Kolkata
The party held a rally under the 'Save Democracy, End Anarchy' banner to counter opposition protests regarding electoral roll revisions.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin led a march in Kolkata on Monday as part of the 'Save Democracy, End Anarchy' campaign. According to reports from Bhaskar English, Deccan Herald and ThePrint, the procession moved from College Street to Dharmatala.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari joined the march, having received Nabin at the airport earlier in the day. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and other senior leaders also participated in the rally, which included hundreds of supporters.
The BJP organised these programmes across several cities to counter opposition protests regarding the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The party accused opposition groups of spreading misinformation and causing unrest during the revision exercise.
Addressing the gathering, BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar said the movement aimed to protect democracy against what the party described as opposition-backed anarchy. He stated that people were standing with the truth against falsehood.
BJP MLA Arjun Singh claimed that external powers were providing funds to efforts intended to weaken the country's democracy. Meanwhile, CPI(M) MLA Mustafizur Rahman Rana questioned why an opposition protest elsewhere would lead to such a demonstration in West Bengal, noting the new government has been in power for six months.
Earlier on Monday, Nabin had taken part in a similar programme in Bhagalpur, Bihar, where he criticised opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee over their protests against the SIR exercise.
