Producer Namit Malhotra mortgaged family home to fund VFX business

The producer of the upcoming Ramayana film recalled taking a Rs 2 crore loan to start his visual effects venture.

Producer Namit Malhotra recently shared details of his early career, revealing that his family mortgaged their home to fund his visual effects business. According to a report by The Times of India, Malhotra's journey began with an initial investment of approximately Rs 7 lakh, which was funded by his father and a bank loan.

Malhotra, a third-generation member of a film family, started his entrepreneurial journey at age 18. He initially intended to become a film director but transitioned into computer graphics after a conversation with a friend of his father on a flight.

The producer recalled that in 1997, his company had a turnover of Rs 75 lakh while the business held a loan of Rs 2 crore. He stated that if the business had failed, the family would have become homeless as they had invested everything into the new technology.

Malhotra's father, Naresh Malhotra, supported the venture by mortgaging the family home. The producer noted that his father did not flinch despite the considerable financial risk involved.

The visual effects company has since grown into a globally recognised studio. It has contributed to Hollywood productions such as Avatar and has eight Oscars associated with its work.
