Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that amended service rules will disqualify employees found violating the state's Uniform Civil Code.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that government employees found practising polygamy will face dismissal from service and disqualification from future government jobs.
According to The Assam Tribune, the state government has amended the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules to include these stricter disciplinary measures.
Sarma stated that the amendment was added under Rule 7, Clause 6, to ensure strict punishment for such violations following the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam.
The Chief Minister said that if an employee is caught practising polygamy, departmental proceedings will be started against them, leading to dismissal and future disqualification from government service.
Sarma clarified that the UCC provisions implemented in the state apply to all religions, including Christianity, Islam and Hinduism.
The announcement follows a Cabinet meeting and marks an effort to enforce the UCC within the state's government workforce.
