Worker killed as storm hits Sadiya and blocks NH-115
A severe storm in Chapakhowa uprooted trees, damaged houses, and disrupted road connectivity on Tuesday morning.
A severe storm struck Chapakhowa in Sadiya around 2 am on Tuesday, killing a worker and causing widespread damage, according to The Assam Tribune.
The worker, identified as Shiva Shankar Shah, a resident of Dhola, died after a tree fell on an aluminium warehouse in the Marowapatty area. Shah is survived by his wife and two children.
Rescue efforts were hampered by power outages and blocked roads. A local resident said they used a private vehicle to take Shah to the hospital because fallen trees prevented an ambulance from reaching the site.
The resident stated that they had to wait 15-20 minutes for a doctor to arrive, but Shah had already passed away. Medical authorities advised taking the body to Tinsukia for examination as Sadiya lacks a post-mortem facility.
The storm uprooted trees that obstructed nearly one kilometre of National Highway 115 (NH-115), bringing vehicular movement to a standstill. In Tupsinga village, a family sought shelter in a nearby house after the storm blew away their tin roofs.
The village head visited Tupsinga to assess the damage caused by the storm, which also damaged several houses and knocked down electric poles and lines.
