Greater Chennai Corporation to redevelop schools in various city zones

The Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission sanctioned new school constructions during a committee meeting held on Tuesday.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to redevelop schools across several parts of Chennai, according to The Hindu. The third common project sanctioning and monitoring committee meeting of the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission sanctioned the construction of new schools at two locations on Tuesday.

Seven more schools are expected to be redeveloped shortly, bringing the total expected redevelopments to at least nine GCC-run schools. The civic body currently manages 420 schools, some of which have dilapidated buildings.

In the Manali zone, Ward 17 councillor R. Jaisankar said the redevelopment of a GCC-run middle school with six new classrooms will improve education. He noted that Class X students in Kosappur currently travel 5 km to a school in Manali, while others are enrolled in higher secondary schools in Red Hills located outside corporation limits.

In the Thiru. Vi. Ka.

Nagar zone, the GCC received approval to redevelop one of the three schools it runs in Ward 77. Ward councillor B. Sumathi said poor residents need better GCC-run schools for free quality education at the higher secondary level, adding that the Urdu School and Adi Dravidar School also require upgrades.

During previous GCC Council meetings, councillors have raised concerns regarding an inadequate number of classrooms. It was reported that classes are being held under trees in several zones of the city.
