Cyclone Murasu causes flooding in Eluru district low-lying areas

District Collector K. Vetri Selvi has ordered the evacuation of residents from vulnerable houses and areas as heavy rains continue.

Heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Murasu led to the flooding of several mandals and low-lying regions in Eluru district over the last 24 hours, according to The Hindu.

The downpour resulted in uprooted trees and knee-deep water on major roads. Rainfall was recorded in Mandavalli, Eluru Urban, Kalidindi, Denduluru, Nidamarru, and Mudinepalli, among other mandals.

District Collector K. Vetri Selvi reviewed the situation with officials from the Police, Revenue, Irrigation, and Panchayat Raj departments on Tuesday. She instructed officers to move people from old houses and high-risk areas to safer locations.

The Collector directed Irrigation Department engineers to track water levels in the Yerrakaluva, Jalleru, Tammileru, and Kovvada rivers. She also requested headmasters to provide reports regarding power supply and the state of school buildings.

Vetri Selvi advised the public to avoid standing near electric poles, hoardings, or trees. Rescue and relief work is being conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Fire teams alongside flood-duty personnel.
