Gujarat jails placed on high alert after email bomb threat

Security teams searched Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad as cyber investigators work to trace the sender of the email.

Jails across Gujarat have been placed on high alert after the office of the Gujarat Director General of Police received a bomb threat via email, according to a report by Urban Acres.

The email reportedly named several facilities, including jails in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot and Surat.

In Ahmedabad, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, local police, and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad searched the Sabarmati Central Jail premises. The search included sensitive barracks and the high-security Anda Cell using sniffer dogs and metal detectors, though no explosives were found.

The Sabarmati jail houses gangsters, prisoners linked to terror activities and convicts in serial-blast cases. Authorities have increased security for visitors and vehicles, restricted unauthorised access, and strengthened surveillance at watchtowers and CCTV control rooms.

A case has been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station. Investigators, with help from the Forensic Science Laboratory, are examining server logs and email headers to see if the sender used encrypted services, a virtual private network or a proxy server.

The statewide alert and searches are continuing while technical teams work to identify the source of the message.
