Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra emerged as the top three states for research publications following the launch of a new dashboard.
Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra have emerged as the leading states in research publications according to the India Science and Technology (S&T) Scoreboard launched on Tuesday, Rediff reported. The new interactive platform by Niti Aayog provides data to help states identify strengths and formulate science and technology policies.
In the 2024-25 period, Tamil Nadu recorded 44,611 research publications. Uttar Pradesh followed with 29,298 publications, while Maharashtra recorded 28,947. Regarding patent applications, Tamil Nadu maintained the top position, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri stated that for India to advance in science and technology, states must play a more energetic role. He noted that the scoreboard, driven by cooperative and competitive federalism, will allow states to learn from each other and address existing gaps.
Niti Aayog Member (S&T) Abhay Karandikar said that science and technology policy needs to be based on comparable and reliable evidence. He mentioned that research and innovation data has previously been spread across different sources, making it hard for states to evaluate their standing.
Department of Science and Technology Secretary Umesh V Waghmare said the scoreboard provides a useful state-level view for the national evidence base. The platform integrates data from higher education, R&D institutions, and deep tech startups to track research quality and impact across academia, industry, and government labs.
