Madhya Pradesh police inspector killed by liquor-laden truck in Dewas district

The death of Inspector Dilip Puri occurred after a driver allegedly attempted to flee during a vehicle inspection on the night of November 2-3.

A police inspector in Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district was killed by a truck carrying suspected liquor on the intervening night of November 2-3, according to India Today. Inspector Dilip Puri, who was in charge of the Khategaon police station, was run over by the vehicle after he asked the driver to allow an inspection of the cargo.

Police said the driver, identified as Ajju, also known as Gajendra, attempted to flee with the truck. Puri was standing beside the vehicle when he came under the rear wheels and died around 4 am on November 3 at a hospital in Khategaon due to internal injuries and excessive bleeding. The driver, a resident of Alirajpur, abandoned the truck 5 km from the spot and is currently being hunted by police.

Investigations revealed the liquor was sourced from a store in Timarni in Harda district. Police arrested Rahul Jaiswal, a co-partner in the liquor store, at Indore airport. Jaiswal, a former Youth Congress district president of Harda, named three other partners: Mohin Jaiswal of Ahmedabad, Patendra Jaiswal in Barwani, and Manish Jaiswal in Indore.

Authorities also arrested Vijay Rao, an alleged liquor supplier to Gujarat, in Indore, and Keram Singh, who allegedly organised the transport of consignments. Jaiswal, Rao, and Singh have been booked under the Excise Act, while the absconding driver faces murder charges.

The incident highlights how liquor from Madhya Pradesh is suspected to cater to demand in Gujarat, where prohibition has been in force since the 1960s. The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore and a job on compassionate grounds for the wife of the deceased inspector.
