Gujarat University orders probe into waste disposal financial allegations
The investigation follows claims by the NSUI that the university lost between ₹2.5 crore and ₹3 crore over several years.
Gujarat University has ordered an inquiry into alleged financial irregularities regarding the disposal of waste from its 300- to 350-acre campus, according to Urban Acres.
The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) claimed the university lost between ₹2.5 crore and ₹3 crore over the last five to six years due to payments made to Dhruv Corporation for transporting waste to the Pirana dumping site.
The student organisation alleged that the agency received approximately ₹8,000 per dumper without an open tender process, whereas the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) waste-transport cost was between ₹2,000 and ₹2,500 per dumper.
The NSUI further alleged that the university paid the private agency between ₹48 lakh and ₹58 lakh annually, despite having an existing ₹22 lakh annual contract with a company named Sun for campus cleaning.
The university's in-charge vice-chancellor stated that the administration received a representation alleging payments were made outside established rules. The official noted that university rules require a tender process for any expenditure exceeding ₹10 lakh.
The Estate Department has been directed to conduct a fact-based inquiry into the procurement and payments. The investigation, which will examine the quantity of waste, number of dumpers, and tender rule applicability, is expected to be completed within two to three days or within a week.
